The Nursing Process — common questions
- Why does this matter for answering questions?
- Because it settles most 'what does the nurse do first' items. When several options are all reasonable actions, the one earliest in the process is usually correct — you assess before you intervene unless the situation is immediately dangerous.
- When do I skip assessment and act?
- When waiting would cause harm. Airway, breathing and circulation problems are acted on rather than assessed further. Outside those, gathering information before intervening is the safer read of a question.
- How is this different from prioritisation?
- The nursing process orders your steps for one patient; prioritisation orders patients against each other. Questions often combine them, so know which one is being asked before choosing.
